Did you know that the idea behind the super-compact smart cars all started with watches?

In the late 1980s, the CEO of the company behind Swatch came up with concept of a ‘Swatchmobile’, a car that would offer personalisation features designed to appeal to customers looking for a small and stylish vehicle. They partnered with manufacturer Daimler-Benz AG to create the car and the name was eventually changed to smart, an acronym for ‘Swatch Mercedes Art’.

The car first launched in the UK in 2000, and there have been a number of different models on the market since, including the ForTwo, ForFour and Roadster.
