The popular Mercedes E-Class is now on sale in the form of a plug-in hybrid – with prices starting from £47,700. Available in both saloon or estate guises, the PHEV model is badged as the E 300 de and is fitted with a 2.0-litre diesel engine and electric hybrid module. The diesel unit can develop 191bhp and 400Nm of torque, while the electric module makes a further 121bhp. When used together, the 300 de can achieve 166.2mpg and emit just 41g/km CO2.

The 300 de saloon can go from 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds, with the estate reaching the mark just 0.1 seconds slower – with both models able to reach the electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. On electric power alone, the 300 de saloon can go 34 miles on a single charge, while the estate offering can go 32 miles in zero-emission mode. Both can be charged from 10 to 100 per cent in just two hours with a 7.4kW charging system.

Entry level SE models come with an impressive amount of standard equipment, including blind spot assist and active park assist with front and rear sensors, as well as 18-inch alloy wheels. Keyless-go, aluminium and wood trim, the dual-display widescreen cockpit system and split rear seats are also included.

Prices for the E 300 de start from £47,700 for the saloon, while the estate version starts from £49,700.
