When you hear ‘smart car’, you think of tiny two-seater cars zipping through tight city streets and into the tiniest of parking spaces, but today’s smarts aren’t all about that. The new generation of smart has arrived, with the #1, #3 and #5 models.

The smart #1 delivers up to 273 miles of electric range on a full charge, a minimalist interior and a smooth, refined drive. Recognising its impressive blend of performance and practicality, the smart #1 was named ‘Best Small Electric SUV’ at the 2024 What Car? Awards.

The smart #3 steps things up with a more coupe-like silhouette and performance-focused edge. It shares much of its DNA with the #1 but with an added sporty twist, especially in the BRABUS edition, which boasts 0-62 mph in just 3.7 seconds.

The smart #5, released at the end of 2025, has already made a strong start. It has picked up multiple awards for safety and design, including recognition as the top family electric SUV for 2026.

What makes smart particularly interesting right now is where it’s heading next. While the iconic smart ForTwo remains part of its heritage, the brand is rumoured to be revisiting its compact roots with another new smart car, the smart #2, expected to arrive in 2026.

Lotus

Known for its lightweight sports cars, Lotus might not be the first brand that comes to mind in the EV world, but that’s exactly why it deserves a second look. The Lotus Eletre, the first electric Lotus car released, is a bold reinvention of the brand, blending classic Lotus handling with electric power in a high-performance electric SUV, offering up to 600 bhp, a 0-62 mph time of 2.9 seconds, and around 373 miles of range. The Eletre is also packed with a state-of-the-art infotainment system that provides seamless connectivity, ensuring a high-tech, user-friendly experience.

Another addition to the Lotus lineup is the Lotus Emeya, a new Lotus car and all-electric grand tourer that takes performance even further with up to 905 bhp and 0-62 mph in just 2.8 seconds. These models mark a powerful shift for Lotus, combining the brand’s iconic driving dynamics with cutting-edge EV performance, futuristic tech and sleek, head-turning design.

CUPRA

CUPRA was officially launched as a standalone brand in 2018, evolving from SEAT’s performance division. It’s already making a bold mark in the EV space, and leading the charge is the CUPRA Born, a sporty hatchback that blends everyday suitability with a playful edge. With up to 335 miles of range and a punchy acceleration, the Born makes city driving fun again. It was named ‘Most Fun to Drive’ at the 2024 Autotrader New Car Awards, as well as ‘Best Small Electric Car to Drive’ at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards in both 2024 and 2025.

But the real conversation starter is the CUPRA Tavascan. As the brand’s first all-electric SUV coupe, the Tavascan doesn’t just perform, it stands out. With dual motors, all-wheel drive, and up to 340 bhp, all wrapped in a stunning, distinctive design with a tech-packed interior.

The newest addition to CUPRA is the CUPRA Raval, arriving in summer 2026. It combines sporty styling with a strong focus on sustainability, using advanced recycled materials throughout its design. Performance-wise, it can go from 0-60 mph in around 6.9 seconds, while still offering an impressive electric range of up to 270 miles.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen has been steadily growing its ID. range, but it’s the VW electric ID. Buzz that has stolen the hearts of many. This electric reimagining of the classic campervan is as nostalgic as it is forward-thinking.

With up to 335 hp and around 230 miles of range, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is practical and versatile, available in both rear and all-wheel drive options. It can comfortably seat up to seven passengers, with thoughtful storage solutions, a panoramic roof, ambient lighting and eco-conscious materials throughout. The modular design makes it ideal for road trips, family journeys, or everyday use.

A cool detail that adds to its personality is the hidden “Easter eggs” scattered throughout the interior, including a world map outline, mini Buzz silhouettes, its very own ice scraper, a bottle opener, and even a smiley face design. These small touches deserve a closer look.

It was even named the 2025 World Car Design of the Year, showcasing how electric cars can embrace both innovation and personality.

Porsche

Similar to Lotus, Porsche is known for its sports cars, specifically the iconic Porsche 911. Porsche is still very invested in their sports cars, as well as the addition of electric Porsche models.

In 2020, Porsche launched the Porsche Taycan, its first Porsche electric car model, offering up to 421 miles of range depending on the specification. Since then, Porsche has launched the Porsche Macan Electric, a Porsche electric SUV, bringing its popular SUV into the electric world. The electric Macan keeps Porsche’s focus on driving performance while adding everyday practicality.

2026 has in store a new EV model for Porsche, the Porsche Cayenne EV, another model that has been reintroduced an EV variant. It will be another key model for the brand, combining strong performance, luxury, everyday practicality, and the latest technology in an all-electric package.

XPENG

XPENG is a relatively new EV brand and a fresh addition to the JCT600 brand portfolio. Founded in 2014 in Guangzhou, China, by He Xiaopeng, XPENG officially arrived in the UK in 2025, marking an important step in its global expansion.

As of April 2026, the main model available in the UK is the XPENG G6. It’s a fully electric SUV focused on range, fast charging, and everyday usability. Inside, it feels modern and tech-focused, with plenty of space and features designed to keep driving simple and comfortable.

Due to arrive later in 2026 is the XPENG G9. This XPENG car sits above the G6 and offers more space, a more premium feel, and even faster charging.

Looking even further ahead, XPENG is also developing the XPENG AeroHT, known as a “land aircraft carrier.” It combines a large three-axle electric SUV with a detachable two-person electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft stored on board. If it does come to the UK, it would be a very exciting and unique addition.

Changan

Another addition to the JCT600 brand portfolio is Changan, one of China’s oldest and largest state-owned automakers, founded in 1862. Changan car brand officially arrived in the UK in 2025 and has already introduced two electric models to UK roads - the Changan Deepal S05 and the Changan Deepal S07.

The Changan Deepal S05 is the more compact model in the range currently, designed for drivers who want something easy to live with day to day. It’s well-suited for every day, but still offers plenty of space, modern technology and a comfortable, well-equipped interior.

The Changan Deepal S07 offers a larger, more spacious design. It’s a great option for those who want extra comfort and practicality, especially for longer journeys or family use, while still keeping the same tech-focused approach and smooth electric driving experience.

While Changan is still in the early stages of its UK journey, it’s an exciting new addition, and one to watch as the brand continues to grow and expand its electric lineup.

These underrated electric stars are bringing fresh energy to the EV landscape in 2026.
