How Much Can You Save by Switching to an EV?

From lower fuel costs to reduced maintenance and beyond, EVs offer multiple ways to save. Discover the advantages of switching to an electric vehicle today.

How Much Can You Save by Switching to an EV?

Whenever you’re considering a new car, one of the first questions is always: How much will it cost, and how much could I save? With electric vehicles (EVs) quickly becoming the future of driving, they’re no longer just the eco-friendly choice; they’re also a financially smart one.

While switching to an EV might feel like a big change, the savings can be both immediate and long-term. From lower running costs to government incentives, going electric could leave more money in your pocket than you might expect.

Fuel Savings

One of the most noticeable savings when switching to an electric vehicle (EV) is fuel, since EVs don’t use petrol or diesel at all. Traditional petrol and diesel prices are not only high but also unpredictable. Drivers often find themselves checking the fuel price sign as part of their daily routine, calculating how much a full tank will cost.

EV owners avoid this entirely. Charging at home is straightforward, significantly more cost-effective, and can often be done overnight when electricity rates are lower. Charging a medium-sized car at home costs around 8p per mile, while a diesel or petrol vehicle can cost around 13p to 17p per mile to fuel. (As of January 2024).

Maintenance Costs

Another major way electric vehicles save you money is through significantly lower maintenance costs. Unlike traditional petrol or diesel cars, EVs have far fewer moving parts with no engine oil to change, no spark plugs, no exhaust systems, and fewer components prone to wear and tear.

This simpler design means routine servicing is quicker, easier, and much cheaper. On average, EVs cost almost a third less in servicing bills than petrol or diesel vehicles.

Government Incentives

Buying a new car is a big investment, but the government currently offers several incentives to help reduce the cost of going electric. In July 2025, a new electric car grant was reintroduced, offering up to £3,750 off certain brand-new EVs, primarily those priced under £37,000 and meeting strict environmental standards.

Grants are available to help with home charger installation. If you have private off-street parking, you can claim up to £350 towards the cost. For those with on-street parking, a separate grant supports installing a permanent cross-pavement solution, provided you get permission from your local council.

Clean Air Zone Fees

Clean Air Zones (CAZ) are being introduced in many UK cities to tackle pollution, and they come with daily charges for vehicles that don’t meet specific emission standards. While some newer petrol and diesel cars might still avoid fees, many older or higher-polluting vehicles, including vans, trucks, and other commercial vehicles, face costly charges.

Switching to a low or zero-emission vehicle means you’re completely exempt from these fees. That’s a direct saving every time you drive in these zones, adding up to significant money back in your pocket over time.

But the benefits don’t stop there. By choosing an electric vehicle, you’re not only avoiding charges, but you’re also actively helping to improve air quality and protect the environment.

Switching to an electric vehicle offers more than just environmental benefits; it can also lead to significant financial savings.
