Some cars are fast. Some are rare. Fewer still become woven into the fabric of sporting history.
In Formula One, the Safety Car is one of the most visible yet quietly influential machines on the grid. When it appears, everything changes. Races pause, strategies unravel, and tension rises across grandstands and living rooms around the world. It is a role that demands absolute performance, precision and reliability - carried out under relentless scrutiny and at the very highest level of global motorsport.
In 2021, a new chapter began when Aston Martin engineering returned to the sharp end of Formula One operations for the first time in more than two decades, supplying a Vantage‑based vehicle for Safety Car duties under FIA governance. It placed British performance engineering at the heart of the sport once again, leading the world’s fastest racing cars at moments when control mattered most.
That season would go on to be one of the most dramatic in Formula One history - and the Safety Car would play a defining role.
The idea of a Formula One Safety Car was first explored at the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix, as the sport began to understand that managing danger was just as important as celebrating speed. Early deployments were inconsistent, experimental and sometimes controversial.
It wasn’t until 1993 that the safety car F1 fans now recognise became a permanent feature of every Grand Prix weekend, formalising procedures for neutralising races during incidents, poor weather or recovery operations. From that point onward, the Safety Car evolved in parallel with Formula One itself - becoming faster, more capable and more technically demanding.
As cars grew quicker and aerodynamics more aggressive, the Safety Car had to maintain a pace that kept tyre temperatures, brakes and engines within operating windows. Anything less risked compromising safety rather than enhancing it.
By the early 2020s, this role required a uniquely engineered machine capable of sustained high‑speed running, repeated hard braking, and complete reliability - lap after lap, circuit after circuit.

Derived from the Aston Martin Vantage, the Safety Car used during the 2021–2023 seasons was extensively reworked to meet FIA operational requirements. Cooling systems were uprated to cope with prolonged running at high speeds, while braking and chassis components were reinforced to withstand the extreme demands of controlling a live Formula One field.
Inside, the cabin bears little resemblance to a road car. Additional communications systems, FIA data logging, GPS tracking and marshalling interfaces transform the interior into a mobile control centre. Every switch and display is positioned for function, not form - allowing the driver to respond instantly under pressure.
Piloted throughout this era by experienced FIA Safety Car driver Bernd Mayländer, the car supported 34 Grands Prix across the globe, covering more than 10,000 kilometres at the front of Formula One’s most demanding circuits.
It is no exaggeration to say that few road‑derived vehicles are ever tested so publicly - or so relentlessly.
