Volkswagen have that tricky ‘second album’ task to navigate. After the release and launch of their widely-acclaimed ID.3 electric hatchback, the German auto-maker now also has an all-electric SUV in its ranks.
The ID.4 is the follow-up to the ID.3, and becomes the second model in VW’s newly-established ID model range. All-electric power, quick charging, and trendy good looks are here to stay.
While the ID.3 is a four-door hatchback meant to reimagine the spirit of the Golf in a bespoke electric package, the ID.4 is a new direction for Volkswagen. It’s an SUV in size and shape, but its clever use of lines and paint colours make it look sleeker and more futuristic than similar models in its segment.
The design fits in well with the conventions already established with the ID.3, such as LED light bars, an aerodynamic shape, and a cutting-edge cabin.
Being an EV, the ID.4 is powered totally by batteries. In First Edition guise, the 77kWh battery pack is good for 310 miles of WLTP-verified range, and plugging into a rapid charger can juice levels back up to 198 miles in just 30 minutes. Range anxiety? What range anxiety?
Volkswagen has always been excellent at delivering quality, tactile interiors that boast impressive levels of technology, and the ID.4 is no different. There’s loads of room for every occupant, and the big front, rear and side windows make visibility excellent too.
A 10-inch touchscreen handles infotainment duties, while VW’s latest driver information display sits proudly behind the comfortable steering wheel. Oh, and there’s mood lighting too. Perfect!
