Audi is soon to release the second generation of its top-end coupe, the A7, and although the main shape has stayed similar, it is all change both inside and out.
Taking design pointers from the Prologue concept of 2014 – and first applied on the A8 earlier in 2017 – the A7 has a new front grille design, sharper body lines and new rear shape, including an end-to-end light bar that incorporates the brake light and indicators.
Inside it is totally new too. Yes, the quality from the previous A7 remains, but the package in which that quality is delivered is different.
Much like the A8, the coupe comes with a dual central touchscreen setup, with the lower of the two able to control what goes on in the top screen while you are driving. For example, you can write the name of your destination with your finger, and the sat-nav will recognise it and input it for you. You can also adjust all of the climate control, seat heating and media with them, too.
Behind the steering wheel A7 models come with the Virtual Cockpit system, which is a fully-customisable concept that allows drivers to pick and choose what information they see on the 12.3-inch display.
As it shares its base with the A8, the A7 will be fitted with Level 3 autonomous technology later in 2018 – meaning that in certain conditions the car can drive itself, as long as the driver is alert and ready to take back control when needed.
To add to the futuristic feel, all A7 models will come with a mild-hybrid setup with each powertrain. The 3.0-litre V6 petrol that will be available from launch has a 48-volt electrical system supporting it to help save fuel, by shutting down the engine on a long cruise between speeds of 34mph and 99mph. Further petrol and diesel engine options will be available soon after launch.
By combining a saloon, coupe and estate all in one body, the A7 could be the premium cruiser for you, and with prices starting from £56,000, few competitors can compete on its all-round appeal.
