One of the most iconic cars of the 20th Century was the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 – as it kick-started the race the make the best hot hatch.
It was lightweight, had just enough power and was excellent to drive, instantly making it an all-time classic.
41 years on from the Golf GTI’s debut, VW has taken the essence of the original and put it into the smallest car in the range – the up!
Due for release early on in 2018, the up! GTI is the brand’s new pocket-rocket. It’s fitted with a 1.0-litre petrol engine that produces 114bhp and weighs less than a tonne at 997kg.
With that power-to-weight ratio, the up! GTI is capable of 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 122mph – which doesn’t sound like much, but means you’ll be on the throttle all the time.
Underneath the skin of the up! is sports suspension to help give better grip and reduce body roll, while VW has added a rear spoiler to improve rear axle downforce.
Inside, you get the red tartan interior that comes with other GTI models, while the red theme continues on the exterior with the brake calipers and on the front grille.
With its debut coming early in 2018, the up! GTI is an eagerly anticipated model that is likely to make the hot hatch fans of the world very happy.
