Built in the UK at the Ellesmere Port plant and based on an all-new lightweight platform, the Astra Sports Tourer is lighter and sleeker than ever before, despite having almost exactly the same dimensions as before.
Weighing in at 190kg less than the outgoing car, the Astra Sports Tourer improves on interior dimensions too - 26mm more headroom in the front, 28mm more legroom in the rear and a load space of up to 1,630 litres, 80 litres more than previously. The rear seats can now accommodate three child seats simultaneously.
Designed in the UK, the new Astra Sports Tourer has a drag co-efficient of 0.272. This means that the new range of efficient engines have to do less work to propel the Astra, resulting in fuel economy ratings of up to 83.1mpg and CO2 from as little as 89g/km.
The diesel options in the range are all 1.6 litres in capacity, from the entry level 108hp model up to the 158hp BiTurbo CDTI. This unit is still capable of 67.3mpg combined, but posts performance figures that are almost identical to the previous top diesel option - a 2-litre, 192hp engine.
For those after some extra performance, the 197hp 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo will pull the Astra to 60mph in 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 146mph, yet still returns 45.6mpg combined.
The Sports Tourer fits into the familiar Astra trim range, starting at Design specification with air-conditioning, cruise control, LED daytime running lights and the IntelliLink system, with a 7-inch colour touchscreen, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth audio streaming and smartphone mirroring. Tech Line adds a navigation upgrade to the IntelliLink system, with 8-inch colour touchscreen, six premium speakers and a leather-covered steering wheel.
SRi is a sportier flavour of Astra, with 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights and silver roof rails. You'll also get automatic wipers and lights, Vauxhall OnStar, a driving assistance pack with lane departure warning, follow distance indicator, forward collision alert and automatic emergency city braking. Elite is the flagship specification, with additional heated steering wheel, leather seat trim, front sports seats with extendable cushions and four-way lumbar adjust, heated front and outer rear seats, front sill plates, dual zone climate control and an electric parking brake.
Electronic stability control is standard across the range, while the new Astra can be specified with a touchless tailgate open/close system and IntelliLux intelligent Matrix LEDs headlights.
