smart has released details of its latest all-electric powertrains, which will be fitted to all of the manufacturer’s models.
This makes smart the only company in the world to provide electric power and combustion engines to its entire range of vehicles.
Shown in the flesh for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, the electric drive models will be fitted with a 17.6 kWh capacity battery, giving them a range of 100 miles - perfect for urban driving.
Fitted with a high-performance charging unit, the battery can be charged up twice as quickly as before, and from 2017, a new fast charger can be fitted as an optional extra that charges the smart’s battery in 45 minutes.
This announcement also sees the world’s first electric-powered cabriolet with the fortwo cabrio.
The top speed of all the models is limited to 80mph to ensure the maximisation of the battery’s range.
To ensure ease of movement in urban traffic, the electric drive models have a single fixed gear ratio, which means there is no need to change gear in dense traffic. When in reverse, the engine’s direction of rotation changes to keep serviceable parts down to a minimum.
All premium trim levels are available on the smart electric drive models, including the electric drive design package and the recently released Brabus package.
The electric drive models will go on sale at the start of 2017, with UK customers taking delivery in September next year.
