Land Rover has described the plug-in Hybrid as their “most innovative powertrain yet”, the PHEV provides a seamless transition between the electric motor and petrol engine, for optimal refinement.
The capability and performance is no less than the other non-electric and hybrid models in the Land Rover portfolio, providing the same level of performance, while also thriving in off-road situations.
The PHEV can be recharged in as little as 7.5 hours when using a home charging cable. Reaching 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds and producing 404hp using the combination of a high power 105kW electric motor and a state-of-the-art 2.0 litre 300hp Si4 Ingenium petrol engine. The PHEV powertrain gives the Range Rover Sport a zero-emission EV range of up to 50km when fully charged.
Features include cabin preconditioning, intelligent plug-in hybrid display, intelligent routing and plug-in hybrid fuel economy. Driving modes include Parallel Hybrid combining petrol and electric drive or full electric drive - EV mode.
The PHEV Sport was well and truly put through its paces last year when it took on the climb to Heaven’s Gate rock arch, one of China’s most famous landmarks and also known as the Dragon Roll challenge. This entailed 999 steps and 99 turns, all at a 45 degree angle! The PHEV is the first SUV to complete this challenge, and it sounds like it took it in its stride.
Panasonic Jaguar Racing reserve and test driver and Le Mans class-winner Ho-Pin Tung put the Range Rover Sport PHEV through its paces and described its performance as brilliant, “it inspired real confidence on the mountain road and climbed the stairs up to Heaven’s Gate effortlessly.” He described the experience as “one of the most demanding driving challenges I’ve ever faced”.
Other challenges the PHEV has faced include a 2,170m descent of the legendary Inferno downhill course in Mürren, Switzerland, a record-setting hill-climb at Pikes Peak, USA and a record crossing of the ‘Empty Quarter’ desert in the Arabian Peninsula.
Prices for the Range Rover Sport PHEV start from £72,185
