JCT600 at Inspiring Automotive Women Day 2019

The annual Inspiring Automotive Women Day returned this year, organised by the UK Automotive 30% Club, of which JCT600 are a proud member.

The Club was founded in 2016 by Julia Muir, and the fourth-ever IAW Day took place on Friday 3rd May. It was marked by a day event at the Volkswagen Group UK National Learning Centre in Milton Keynes.

The event was attended by volunteers from the Club’s member companies, including two representatives from JCT600.

Rachel Foster-Vickers, Head of HR for the group’s VW division, and Jess Suffield, Apprentice Technician at Porsche Centre Leeds, were two of the volunteers who were in attendance to give guidance and inspiration to more than 100 female secondary school pupils.

Rachel said: “The day was busy and exciting, and we had the opportunity to get involved in events where we met other inspiring women in our industry, as well as the pupils who were in attendance.

“The ‘Career Speed Networking’ session was a highlight of the day, as it gave the pupils the chance to ask us anything, such as our take-home earnings, what’s tricky about our particular role, or how we balance work and life.

“The day was a huge success, with lots of positive feedback from the pupils – I think they were all really inspired and encouraged by the day!”

Jess added: “It was a great day and I think it really helped inform the pupils about the different roles that exist in the automotive industry. Hopefully it will inspire them to take one as a career path!

“After speaking with the pupils, I think a lot of them were quite shocked that I do a job that’s typically done by a man, but I hope the Q&A sessions helped to change their views on the jobs women can do in the automotive industry.”

Inspiring Automotive Women Day will broaden its scope this year, with outreach activities in 30 schools across the country.

UK Automotive 30% Club members will have the opportunity to engage primary and secondary schools in their locality, with the aim of reaching more than 1000 female pupils.
