Many of you will have watched from the comfort of your sofa, spectated and cheered people on from the sidelines, or you may have even taken part yourself in the London Marathon this weekend, just like Dave Hancock, Service Advisor at Volkswagen Sheffield.
Dave bravely undertook the gruelling 26.2 mile Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 22 April, which is a task at the best of times, however this was the hottest London Marathon to date, meaning conditions were extremely tough for all the runners competing on the day. Dave commented ‘Any thoughts of achieving target times were now out of the window and you knew that this was just about completing the 26.2 miles safely and in one piece.’
Dave was running the Marathon for the Charity, Ben - a not-for-profit charity that provides support, guidance and advice to all workers and their families within the automotive industry. You may remember Dave’s story that we posted back in December and which he shared at the annual Ben Ball.
To briefly explain; back in October 2016 Dave unfortunately suffered a serious back injury that resulted in him having to take extended time off work. Dave began to struggle with not only the physical issues but also financial issues that in turn led to mental issues causing stress, depression and anxiety. During this time, Dave turned to the charity Ben, who gave him the support and direction that he desperately needed to get him back on track.
Therefore, to show his appreciation, and to further raise awareness, and support for Ben, Dave wanted to give something back – and he sure did!
Dave commented on his London Marathon achievement, saying ‘I loved it (in a very strange sort of way). The sense of achieving the biggest challenge of my life and safely in the hottest London Marathon on record is immense. The words of my supporters, family, friends and the amazing charity got me to the end of a marathon. I will never ever forget, for many, many reasons!’
