Porsche Centre Sheffield Celebrates Carrera Cup Night

Porsche Centre Sheffield Celebrates Carrera Cup Night

  • Porsche Centre Sheffield has hosted a Carrera Cup night which included a visit from Yorkshire motor racing driver, Sam Tordoff; fellow Porsche Carrera Cup driver Richard Plant; and Gordon Roberston, Porsche driving instructor from Silverstone Circuit.

Tipped as one of motor racing’s hottest prospects, Sam, 22, is the son of John Tordoff, chief executive of Yorkshire family car retail business JCT600 which owns the Porsche Centre Sheffield on Sheffield Road, Meadowhall.

A former British Karting Champion, Sam graduated from the Renault Clio Cup last year and debuted in the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB in March for Team Parker Racing. He performed exceptionally well in the opening rounds at Brands Hatch last month, taking sixth place against some of the UK’s leading motor racing drivers including Touring Car Champion Tim Harvey.

More than 100 people, comprising members of the Porsche Owners Club, the Supercar Driver Club and customers, visited Porsche Centre Sheffield on Thursday (12 May) to listen to Sam talk about his career, his family heritage of motor racing and, of course, the joy of driving a Porsche. The evening included a display of iconic cars. As well as Sam Tordoff’s and Richard Plant’s 911GT Carrera Cup cars, enthusiasts could also view a 1965 911 S Rally Car (2002 British Historic Championship winner); a 1974 3.0 RS rally car (tarmac spec); a 1976 911 Carrera; and from 1997, a 911 GT3 RS gen 1, a 911 GT3 RS gen 2, a 911 Turbo S Cab and a 911 GTS cab.

“It’s fantastic to be following in the footsteps of my grandfather, Jack Tordoff, who also raced at a professional standard. He competed successfully in cars including the Porsche 911 throughout a long racing and rallying career, winning the International Circuit of Ireland Rally in a Porsche in 1973,” explains Sam.

“Driving the 911 has taken a little getting used to, but there’s no doubt it’s one of the best cars in the world and my audience were in total agreement!”

Sam scored several race wins in his last season in the 2010 Renault Clio Cup, taking third place in the championship, and was selected for the British Racing Drivers’ Club ‘Rising Star’ programme. He was also selected by Porsche GB as one of six finalists for its scholarship programme in October before being signed by Leicestershire motor racing team Parker Racing. He will compete in all 20 races of the 2011 season.

Located at Meadowhall, JCT600’s Porsche Centre Sheffield has a staff of 35 and offers a full range of services including new and used car sales, servicing, parts and MOT.
